XIAO-DEN ZHENG

Born in China, raised in Russia, Xiao-Dan Zheng began her studies on the cello with her father at age 5 and gave her concerto debut with the Ulan-Ude Philharmonic at age 9 in Russia. While attending the Gifted Children's School in Novosibirsk (Siberia), she was accepted to the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and left Moscow for New York in 1997.
After immigrating with her family, Xiao-Dan attended the Juilliard School Pre-College Division. During her studies in New York, she performed in Avery Fischer Hall, the Juilliard Theater, Weill Recital Hall, Jordan Hall of New England Conservatory, Carnegie Hall, and Alice Tully Hall as both a young soloist and chamber musician. Xiao-Dan's awards include winning the concerto competition at Juilliard and at LaGuardia H.S. for Music and Arts and Performing Arts, winner of Juiliard Honor Strings Competition, Second Prize in solo division of Corpus Christi Young Artist Competition, First Prize in solo division and Chamber Music division of the Great Neck (N.Y.) Young Artist Competition, First Prize in Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Young Artist Competition, and BIMFA Festival Concerto Competition (China). Her piano trio has appeared on NPR 'From the Top' show and WQXR 93.6 New York. She performed in Carnegie Hall with Itzhak Perlman, soloed under Pinchas Zukerman in Ottawa Canada, and played at a master class (public lesson) for Yo-Yo Ma. Xiao-Dan is a graduate with honor from the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music where she obtained a B.M. and G.C. in the studio of Ronald Leonard. She is currently a tenured cellist of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra, and the New West Symphony Orchestra. She has been a regular substitute cellist for the San Diego Symphony and Los Angeles Opera. Ms. Zheng has also been honored to lead as a guest principal cellist for the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Santa Barbara Choral Society, Ventura Festival, and Santa Barbara Opera. Xiao-Dan is an alumna of Verbier Music Festival (Switzerland), Pacific Music Festival (Japan),Young Artist Programme (Canada), Beijing International Music Festival (China), The Perlman Music Program (New York/Tel Aviv/Shanghai), Bawdoin Music Festival (Maine), and the New York Strings Seminar. Xiao-Dan will be spending the summer of 2009 at Tanglewood Music Festival as a cello fellow and an injury prevention specialist. |
